"Taiwan contingency," or Taiwan yuji in Japanese, is the term Japanese politicians use for a military conflict in the Taiwan Strait. On November 7, 2025, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi was asked by an opposition lawmaker during a lower house Budget Committee session what would count as a "survival-threatening situation" if China blockaded Taiwan. She said a blockade involving warships and the use of force could qualify.

A survival-threatening situation is a legal category under security laws Japan passed in 2015. It allows the Self-Defense Forces to exercise collective self-defense when a close partner comes under attack and Japan's survival is threatened, even if Japan itself has not been attacked. Previous prime ministers avoided naming specific scenarios. Takaichi became the first sitting prime minister to say publicly that a Taiwan contingency could constitute a survival-threatening situation.

Beijing demanded a retraction, and Takaichi refused. China then urged its citizens to avoid travel to Japan, suspended imports of Japanese seafood, banned exports of dual-use items to Japanese military end users and placed dozens of Japanese companies on export control lists, pushing relations to their lowest point in years. On September 28, 2026, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told former Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya that Japan's leader must "correct" the remarks, the most urgent of three conditions he set for normalizing ties.
