Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek unveiled its first Dimensity Compute Experiences chip on September 21, wagering its next phase of laptop growth on a Google hardware platform that has yet to prove itself in the market.

The chip, called Dimensity CX C10 Max, is built on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s 3-nanometer process and marks MediaTek's first push into what the company calls "AI-first" laptops. It will debut in a high-end, ultra-portable device running Googlebook, Google's new Android-based laptop platform set to launch in October 2026 starting at $899 — a lineup Google is positioning alongside, rather than as a replacement for, its decade-old ChromeOS Chromebooks.

MediaTek packed the chip with an eight-core CPU built around one Arm Cortex-X925 core, three Cortex-X4 cores and four Cortex-A720 cores, an 11-core GPU, and its eighth-generation NPU, the MediaTek NPU 890, capable of up to 55 trillion operations per second (TOPS). That neural processor, MediaTek said, is tuned to run Google's Gemini Intelligence features directly on the device rather than routing them through the cloud. The chip also supports Wi-Fi 7 at speeds up to 7.3 gigabits per second, dual-engine Bluetooth 6.0, and a new Imagiq 1090 image signal processor built for cameras up to 32 megapixels.

"Dimensity CX C10 Max is designed for the next wave of intelligent computing, combining flagship performance and power-efficient processing," said Vince Hu, MediaTek's senior vice president and general manager of its data center and computing business unit, in the company's launch statement.

MediaTek's New Chip Targets a Single Google Platform

MediaTek's decision to tie its newest AI silicon to one Google product line breaks from its usual playbook, in which Dimensity mobile chips ship broadly across dozens of Android phone models. Googlebook, which Google introduced earlier this year, runs Android rather than ChromeOS — a structural shift that would put Google's phone and PC software under one roof instead of two separate systems.

Lenovo is so far the platform's most visible hardware partner. According to a report from 9to5Google, Lenovo has already begun selling a 15-inch Googlebook powered by an Intel chip, with a second, MediaTek-powered device expected to follow later this year. MediaTek itself has not named a launch partner, device, price or release date for the C10 Max.

Analysts Say the Chip Recycles Older Silicon

Despite MediaTek's "all-new" framing, the C10 Max's core architecture closely mirrors the Kompanio Ultra 910, a chip MediaTek already sells for existing ChromeOS Chromebook Plus laptops, according to an analysis by Tom's Hardware. The two chips share the same GPU, NPU and L3 cache configuration; the main change in the newer part is faster memory support, moving from 8,533 megatransfers per second to 9,600.

MediaTek has also claimed the C10 Max delivers up to 15% faster multi-threaded performance and 50% lower power draw in single-threaded workloads than Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite. Tom's Hardware noted those comparisons ran on mismatched platforms — ChromeOS on a MediaTek reference board against Windows 11 on a Samsung Galaxy Book4 — and benchmarked against Qualcomm's older X Elite generation rather than its newer Snapdragon X2 chips.

Taiwan's Chip Industry Doubles Down on AI PCs

Even with those caveats, the C10 Max extends Taiwan's semiconductor industry further into the AI PC race, a category so far led by Qualcomm's Snapdragon X series and Intel's Core Ultra chips. The chip's 3-nanometer fabrication at TSMC — the same node behind MediaTek's flagship smartphone processors — keeps Taiwan at the center of the AI hardware supply chain, even as MediaTek's own numbers face outside scrutiny.

The launch also continues a broader pivot for MediaTek, which has struck a string of AI-related partnerships this year, including deals with Nvidia and Google, as it looks to diversify beyond a smartphone chip market it has separately warned is slowing. Whether the Dimensity CX line becomes a lasting laptop business, or stays bound to a single unproven Google product, may hinge on how well Googlebook itself is received once it reaches consumers in October.
