Taiwan's Fourth Operational Zone restructured its forces on Aug. 12, 2026, integrating Thunderbolt-2000 multiple launch rocket system units and Land Sword II surface-to-air missile batteries into a combined air defense fire network as Han Kuang 42 live-fire exercises continued.
Both systems were mobilized to designated tactical positions to execute fire support and key-point protection missions. Upon arrival, troops rapidly completed equipment deployment, established communications links, and finished combat readiness preparations, maintaining flexible response capability as the enemy situation evolved in order to support follow-on operations by forces across their area of responsibility.
Rapid Deployment Keeps The Force Agile Across Tactical Positions
The Fourth Operational Zone said the exercise prioritized command and control under battlefield conditions, mobile deployment, fires coordination, and adaptive response — ensuring that all units can rapidly readjust positioning based on real-time battlefield conditions. Strengthening both strike effectiveness and key-point defense was also identified as a central objective to maximize combined arms operational effectiveness.
Thunderbolt-2000 And Land Sword II Form A Layered Shield
The two systems serve distinct but complementary roles. The Thunderbolt-2000 — a domestically developed wheeled MLRS produced by Taiwan's National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) — was deployed on demand to deliver fire support at the time and location needed. The Land Sword II, a ground-launched surface-to-air missile system capable of tracking and engaging fixed-wing aircraft, rotary-wing aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles out to 15 kilometers, was tasked with area air defense and protection of key targets.
