MediaTek Warns of 15% Global Smartphone Slump as AI Costs Bite

The global AI infrastructure boom is beginning to extract a tangible cost from the consumer electronics supply chain — and Taiwan's largest chip designer is sounding the alarm. MediaTek disclosed at its investor conference on July 31 that rising component costs have begun to weaken end-device demand significantly enough to drag global smartphone shipments down roughly 15% this year.

BOM Inflation and AI Data Centers Drain Consumer Chip Supply

The mechanism behind the decline is increasingly well understood inside the industry, even if its full impact is still unfolding. AI data center operators have been absorbing a disproportionate share of capacity in advanced process nodes, high-bandwidth memory, and advanced packaging — resources that consumer chip suppliers compete for directly. As availability tightens and unit costs climb, smartphone brands face a narrowing set of bad choices: raise retail prices, absorb the margin hit, or shift their product portfolios toward more profitable segments.

MediaTek had flagged this dynamic at its first-quarter earnings call earlier this year and has not walked it back since. The numbers in the second quarter reflected the pressure in full: smartphone segment revenue fell 14% quarter-on-quarter and 20% year-on-year, dropping to 41% of total company revenue — for the first time falling below the smart device platform segment, which accounted for 53%. Rick Tsai (蔡力行), MediaTek's vice chairman and chief executive, said the smartphone revenue decline was driven primarily by brands responding to higher bill-of-materials costs through price increases or product-mix shifts, both of which have suppressed overall demand. The company held its full-year shipment forecast at approximately negative 15%.

For the third quarter, MediaTek expects smartphone segment revenue to come in flat to down a mid-single-digit percentage compared to the second quarter, with the ramp of its new flagship system-on-chip (SoC) expected to largely absorb weakness elsewhere in the portfolio.

Smartphone Market Splits Between Flagship and Budget Tiers

The market-level contraction is accelerating a structural shift in how smartphone brands allocate resources. Rick Tsai said smartphone brands are now channeling investment into two distinct categories: high-end flagship devices capable of commanding a premium price through differentiated user experience, and low-cost entry-level handsets aimed at price-sensitive buyers.

The implications differ by segment for MediaTek. In the premium tier, the company competes on the strength of its process node, CPU and GPU performance, and AI compute throughput — closing the gap with its primary rival through raw silicon capability. In the entry-level market, the priority is SoC integration density and memory efficiency, which help brand partners lower the total cost of a finished device and protect thin margins.

MediaTek's 2nm Chip Targets the Agentic AI Flagship

To compete at the top of the market, MediaTek is preparing to launch its first 2-nanometer flagship SoC during the third quarter of 2026 — a chip designed around what the company calls the "Agentic AI" smartphone. The term describes a new class of on-device AI capability that goes well beyond conventional generative AI. While today's on-device models typically handle discrete question-and-answer tasks, Agentic AI requires a device to execute extended sequences of planning, reasoning, tool use, and self-correction autonomously. Those demands place significantly higher requirements on CPU, GPU, neural processing unit (NPU), memory bandwidth, and power management — and could fundamentally reshape the architecture of flagship SoCs for years to come.

The company expects the new chip to help MediaTek expand its share of the global flagship smartphone market in 2027. Tsai emphasized, however, that raw compute leadership cannot be the sole objective. "We must balance computing power and chip cost," he said. "MediaTek wants to build chips with sufficient computing capability to support most Agentic AI use cases, while maintaining a reasonable cost structure so that brands using our chips can still run a healthy business."

Tsai Warns Against a Computing Power Race at Brands' Expense

The CEO's remarks address a widening debate in the premium chip industry over aggressive architectural moves — including wafer-stacking and advanced packaging techniques that expand on-chip memory capacity — to meet AI workload demands. Tsai acknowledged MediaTek is evaluating different architectural options but cautioned against optimizing purely for performance metrics. Chips that raise device costs beyond what brand partners can commercially absorb, he argued, ultimately undermine the broader ecosystem MediaTek depends on.

Tsai pointed to China as a leading indicator of where consumer expectations are heading. Large AI model usage has proliferated rapidly among Chinese consumers, shifting their baseline assumptions about what a smartphone should be able to do on-device — a shift that will feed into chipset design roadmaps globally. Outside China, the picture remains less defined: Tsai said MediaTek has observed a range of potential customers developing various AI edge devices in anticipation of the Agentic AI era, but no single hardware form factor has yet emerged as the dominant vehicle.

The company's own answer to that uncertainty rests on platform flexibility. Tsai said MediaTek's advantage — high-performance, low-power SoC design combined with advanced process integration — positions it to serve the eventual winner regardless of whether the market converges on smartphones, PCs, wearables, or an entirely new device category.

Smart Device Platform and NVIDIA Partnership Offset Phone Weakness

While the smartphone business navigates a difficult year, MediaTek's smart device platform — which spans connectivity chips, automotive semiconductors, and communications infrastructure — is growing strongly enough to rebalance the company's revenue mix. The segment posted a 19% quarter-on-quarter and 26% year-on-year increase in the second quarter, reaching 53% of total revenue. The company expects the segment to deliver mid-to-high single-digit sequential growth in the third quarter as new communications and automotive projects begin volume production.

MediaTek also confirmed that RTX Spark — a jointly developed Windows PC platform with NVIDIA — remains on track for a year-end retail launch. Positioned as a high-performance computing device for Agentic AI applications and advanced graphics workloads, the product represents MediaTek's most significant push into the premium PC segment. As the smartphone cycle faces its sharpest downturn in years, the smart device platform and new PC ventures are emerging as the company's primary hedges against handset market risk.
