Global semiconductor equipment spending is on course to nearly double within two years, and countries from Catalonia to Chihuahua are converging on Taiwan to get a seat at the table.
The industry body SEMI projects worldwide sales of semiconductor manufacturing equipment will reach $165.9 billion in 2026 — a 23.2% increase from the previous year — before climbing further to $229.5 billion by 2028. The figures represent a roughly 38% jump over just two years, fueled by artificial intelligence infrastructure buildout, advanced packaging demand, and government-backed fab construction across multiple continents.
Against that backdrop, SEMICON Taiwan 2026's international pavilion has expanded to a record 18 participating countries and 220 booths, up from just 62 booths when the dedicated global section launched in 2023. Organizers held a first-ever pre-show press conference on July 22 in Taipei to mark the milestone, gathering representatives from 17 countries alongside Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs.
"Whether in the past, present, or future, the semiconductor industry has always been built on global collaboration," said Terry Tsao(曹世綸), SEMI's global chief marketing officer and Taiwan president, who chaired the event. "No single country, company, or region can do everything on its own."
SEMI Projects $229.5B Equipment Market by 2028 as AI Reshapes Demand
SEMI data shows the $229.5 billion 2028 equipment forecast reflects a $63.6 billion increase over 2026 levels in just two years. Tsao attributed the trajectory to a fundamental shift in the industry's demand structure — AI has supplanted every previous computing paradigm as the primary growth driver.
"Over the past 50 years, the semiconductor industry was driven in turn by mainframes, personal computers, servers, mobile phones, and the internet," he said. "AI is now the main engine of economic and semiconductor industry growth."
Tsao added that the industry is still in AI's early stages, with technology evolving from generative AI toward agentic AI and, eventually, physical AI. He also cited industry estimates suggesting the global semiconductor market — originally expected to cross the $1 trillion threshold by 2030 — could reach that milestone as early as 2026, with the market potentially expanding to $1.5 trillion by 2030. Beyond pure demand, he noted that government incentives and the regionalization of supply chains are providing additional tailwinds for equipment spending in 2027 and 2028.
Japan Tops SEMICON Taiwan 2026 Pavilion Rankings With 51 Booths
Japan has assembled the single largest national pavilion at the show, consolidating industrial clusters from Fukuoka, Miyagi, and Ibaraki into a 51-booth presence covering equipment, materials, manufacturing, and workforce development. Germany and the Netherlands, participating for the fifth consecutive edition, anchor the European contingent alongside Italy, which is spotlighting advanced manufacturing, and the United Kingdom, which is focusing on IC design, photonics, compound semiconductors, and compute-in-memory technologies.
Three new entrants round out the 2026 lineup: Spain's Catalonia region, emphasizing its R&D ecosystem and talent base; Mexico's Chihuahua state, positioning itself as a nearshoring hub for North American electronics manufacturing; and Finland.
The geographic breadth signals that SEMICON Taiwan's international draw now extends well beyond established semiconductor powers. Australia is bringing a focus on critical minerals and advanced materials. South Korea is highlighting equipment, materials, automation, and inspection and sensing technology. Malaysia and Singapore are centering their pavilions on precision engineering, automation, and test services.
US Delegation at SEMICON Taiwan 2026 Could Exceed 100 as Ties Deepen
The United States is preparing what could be the largest single international delegation at the show. Arizona — home to several major semiconductor fabrication investments — is expected to send roughly 80 representatives, though Tsao suggested the final number could exceed 100.
Raymond Greene, director of the American Institute in Taiwan — the de facto U.S. embassy in Taipei — told the press conference that AI's acceleration has broadened the scope of U.S.-Taiwan semiconductor engagement far beyond manufacturing. This year's American pavilion will feature participants from 11 states and two companies and will host the Freedom 250 Workforce First Summit, convening government, industry, and academic stakeholders around talent development.
Mitsuru Kawai, deputy representative of the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association, framed the bilateral relationship in complementary terms: Japan's depth in equipment and materials pairs with Taiwan's leadership in wafer fabrication and advanced packaging, and that alignment is expanding as global supply chains restructure.
Taiwan Positions Itself as Hub for AI Chips and Server Manufacturing
Tsao emphasized that Taiwan's strategic importance to the global semiconductor supply chain has grown beyond its wafer fabrication prowess. Taiwan is also a critical link in AI server production — providing electronics manufacturing services and original design manufacturing capacity that underpins AI server assembly and global shipments.
The implication, he argued, is that Taiwan now straddles two major hardware verticals: advanced semiconductors and information and communications technology hardware. That dual capability is a key reason foreign companies use SEMICON Taiwan as a primary venue for identifying Taiwanese partners, rather than simply sourcing components.
SEMICON Taiwan 2026 as a whole is expected to span approximately 4,300 booths across Nangang Exhibition Center's Hall 1 and Hall 2 in Taipei, covering 15 industry themes that include advanced packaging, silicon photonics, high-bandwidth memory, quantum technology, cybersecurity, and geopolitics. Organizers expect more than 100,000 professionals from over 65 countries to attend.
Taiwan Ministry Pledges Deeper Alliances Amid Geopolitical Headwinds
Cynthia Kiang(江文若), vice minister of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, delivered a pointed historical comparison in her remarks, warning that current pressures on Taiwan's semiconductor sector are no less severe than the challenges the industry faced when it was built from scratch five decades ago.
"The situation we face today is no easier than 50 years ago," Kiang said, citing simultaneous headwinds: shifts in global power dynamics, export controls, national security concerns, and geopolitical tensions.
She nonetheless argued that AI and emerging technologies are reshaping economies and societies in ways that further underscore semiconductors' strategic importance — and that Taiwan's path forward runs through trusted partnerships. "Taiwan will continue to be a reliable global partner," she said, "working with like-minded countries to build a more resilient and innovative semiconductor industry."
On the policy side, Chiang outlined an active government agenda: the "AI New Ten Major Constructions" program targeting software infrastructure alongside frontier technologies such as silicon photonics and quantum computing; and a push into drones, advanced vehicles, and robotics to diversify Taiwan's economic growth and position the island within emerging non-red supply chain configurations.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs will also host the second Crystal Chain Summit during the show, organized around the theme "Trust, Resilience, and Prosperity." The forum will bring together senior government officials and industry leaders for high-level policy dialogue on building semiconductor supply chains that can withstand geopolitical disruption.
