A black leather jacket synonymous with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang sold for $960,000 at a Sotheby's auction in New York on July 17, shattering the house's pre-sale estimate of $60,000 by a factor of 16.

The result was driven by fierce competition: 45 collectors from around the world entered the bidding, pushing the final price well into territory that surprised even seasoned auction professionals.

The jacket, designed by celebrated American fashion designer Tom Ford, had drawn intense market interest from the moment Sotheby's announced the listing. Brahm Wachter, head of the auction house's modern collectibles department, said the item far transcended ordinary fashion. He called it "an iconic object closely linked to one of the most representative figures of the AI era," with historical significance that needed no further qualification.

Huang has worn the jacket to virtually every major public engagement for years, making it as recognizable as his name. When he appeared on the cover of Time magazine in 2021, the jacket was there — reinforcing its status as a global visual shorthand for Nvidia and the AI industry's dramatic rise. The dynamic echoes the deliberate signature looks of other tech titans: Apple co-founder Steve Jobs and his black turtleneck, and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his rotating wardrobe of identical grey T-shirts.

As the driving force behind Nvidia's transformation into one of the world's most valuable companies — powered by explosive global demand for AI and graphics chips — Huang has become one of the defining business figures of the current technological era. At the height of its market run, Nvidia briefly surpassed both Microsoft and Apple in market capitalization.

Proceeds to Benefit Edge Institute's Education Programs

Sotheby's confirmed that all net proceeds from the sale will be directed to Edge Institute, a nonprofit organization supporting English-language education and professional development opportunities across multiple fields.
