Michelin has released its 2026 Bib Gourmand selections for Taiwan a week ahead of the full guide, naming 146 restaurants across seven cities. Thirteen of them are newcomers, and more than 80% of this year's additions spotlight home-style Taiwanese and Hakka cooking rather than fine dining.
The Bib Gourmand designation recognizes restaurants offering high-quality food at moderate prices — Michelin's way of honoring good value rather than haute cuisine. This year's Taiwan tally breaks down as 37 restaurants in Taipei, 30 in Tainan, 23 in Taichung, 21 in Kaohsiung, 18 in New Taipei, 10 in Hsinchu County and seven in Hsinchu City.
Poullennec Sees Openness in Taiwan's Dining Scene
The Taiwan guide is now in its ninth year, and Michelin's international director, Gwendal Poullennec, said inspectors continue to see the same qualities that first drew them to the island's food culture.
"As the Taiwan guide enters its ninth year, our inspectors continue to see Taiwanese dining culture express openness, diversity and inclusiveness," Poullennec said. "This year's Bib Gourmand selections place a stronger focus on relaxed, genuine dining experiences, along with the street food and local culinary traditions people cherish, keeping Taiwan among Asia's most sought-after food destinations."
Taipei Newcomers Range from Chicken Soup to Japanese Curry
Taipei added four restaurants this year. Ching Chiao built its reputation on a chicken soup simmered for six hours in the Jiangsu-Zhejiang tradition, while Kai Xi has carved out a niche with braised pork rice and slow-braised pork belly. Takeda Curry serves a Japanese dashi-based curry alongside fried chicken, fried shrimp and a wagyu Scotch egg, and You You 1969 — now run by a third generation of the same family — paired a redesigned dining room with its signature deep-fried dough sticks and a decades-old braised pork rice recipe.
Century-Old Kitchens Earn Recognition in the South
Taichung's sole new entry, Dongmu Shizai, specializes in home-style duck: a dry noodle dish tossed with duck in chili oil and garlic, plus duck prepared fresh daily. Tainan added three restaurants that lean on deep local roots — Mie Wanli Mutton, which has operated for more than six decades; Chan Chi, known for its "rice table" style of casual home cooking; and Zhu Chi Preserved Vegetable Duck, an 80-year-old shop built around its namesake dish.
Hakka Cooking Anchors Picks in New Taipei and Hsinchu
New Taipei's three additions each draw on regional food traditions: Papa's Hakka Cuisine for its preserved-vegetable-jar recipes, Beiya Duck Soup for its duck thick soup, and Bitan Bridgehead Goose for its smoked goose. In Hsinchu County, judges selected Jifeng, a set-menu restaurant that reinterprets Hakka cuisine through vegetarian dishes after relocating from Taipei following a two-year hiatus, and Yige Rice Noodles, a Hsinchu street-food institution with more than 40 years in business.
A Growing Indicator for Taiwan's Restaurant Industry
Industry observers increasingly treat the Bib Gourmand list as a bellwether for Taiwan's dining market, since it tracks closer to everyday consumer spending than the guide's starred tier. A Bib Gourmand nod has been shown to drive local tourism, food-focused travel and long lines outside newly listed restaurants. This year's crop of additions, weighted heavily toward traditional Taiwanese flavors, signals that Michelin's inspectors are continuing to prioritize local culture and value for money over conventional fine-dining markers.
The complete 2026 Taiwan Michelin Guide — including starred restaurants, Green Star honorees and other recommended eateries — will be published July 21 on Michelin's official website and app. (Related: Why Taiwan's Toxic Oil Maker Always Passed Its Own Safety Tests | Latest )
