Taiwan Chemical Makers Race to Supply Scarce AI Server Board Resins

Taiwan's printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturers posted a record first quarter, and the boom is now rippling upstream into the specialty resins used to make the boards themselves. Output reached NT$245.6 billion in the first quarter of 2026, up 19.6% from a year earlier and the strongest first quarter on record, according to data from the Taiwan Printed Circuit Association (TPCA).

TPCA projects second-quarter output will climb further to NT$256.1 billion, up 17.4% year-on-year, putting the full-year 2026 figure on track to reach roughly NT$1.05 trillion, a 15.1% increase. The association attributes the surge to sustained demand for AI servers, high-speed networking gear and advanced computing hardware, which has lifted shipments of substrate boards, high-multilayer boards and HDI (high-density interconnect) products — all higher-margin categories than standard consumer PCBs.

AI Servers Push Circuit Boards to Higher Grades

The shift is not just about volume. AI server hardware — motherboards, universal baseboards, OCP accelerator modules, high-speed switch boards and backplanes — now needs to handle far higher layer counts, faster signal speeds and tighter signal-integrity tolerances than consumer electronics ever did. That is forcing board makers to move away from standard FR-4 laminate toward low-loss and ultra-low-loss copper-clad laminate (CCL), along with greater use of low-dielectric resin systems, specialized low-dielectric fiberglass cloth and hyper-very-low-profile (HVLP) copper foil.

As signal speeds rise and board layers multiply, every variable in the manufacturing process — dielectric properties, copper foil roughness, resin flow and fill, lamination alignment, drilling precision, impedance control and electrical testing — has to improve in lockstep. A single weak link can raise the risk of signal loss, reflection or data errors, which in turn makes design verification and yield control considerably harder than on conventional boards.

Switching to 1.6T Raises the Technical Bar Further

The pressure is intensifying as data center switches move from the 800G generation to 1.6T, and as GPU and ASIC platforms pack more high-speed channels onto each board. Consistency in dielectric constant and dissipation factor — the properties that determine how much signal a material loses — now sits alongside copper foil roughness, fiberglass weave structure, circuit design and impedance continuity as a make-or-break factor for signal integrity. Meeting these thresholds requires suppliers with advanced material certifications, tight process control, strong yield management and the capacity to co-develop with customers at global scale.

Material Certification Creates Sticky Supplier Relationships

That certification burden is reshaping competition in the material supply chain. PCB manufacturing has traditionally rewarded scale, cost control and manufacturing efficiency, but as AI server architecture evolves, the technical bottleneck has moved further upstream — from GPUs, ASICs and high-speed switch chips to PCB design, CCL and the raw materials behind them. Standard FR-4 materials remain adequate for most consumer electronics, but long-distance, high-speed, low-loss channels now require mid-to-ultra-low-loss board grades chosen according to each platform's loss budget.

Because switching material suppliers means re-qualification, process adjustments and mass-production risk, once a material passes a customer's certification and proves itself in volume production, that supplier relationship tends to be difficult to dislodge. Competing on price alone is no longer enough; performance, process compatibility, production stability and technical support now decide who wins the business.

Two Taiwan Suppliers Are Moving Up the Resin Ladder

Two Taiwan-listed chemical makers illustrate how far upstream this opportunity now reaches. Qualipoly Chemical Corp. (TWSE: 4722) is expanding its footprint in high-end electronic resins to serve this tighter material specification. Double Bond Chemical Ind. Co., Ltd. (TWSE: 4764) is moving up the technology ladder from MPPO (modified polyphenylene oxide) resin toward M8-grade HC material — a jump industry sources say carries meaningfully higher margins, given the specialized formulation M8 and M9-grade boards demand.
