Taiwan's AI infrastructure supply chain is shifting from copper to light, and semiconductor inspection company MA-tek (Materials Analysis Technology Inc.) is riding the wave. The company posted a fourth consecutive month of record revenue in June, driven by surging demand for silicon photonics testing as Nvidia's next generation optical switches move into production.
MA-tek reported June revenue of NT$558 million, up 2.56% from May and 11.01% year over year. Second quarter revenue reached NT$1.644 billion, a quarterly record, while first half revenue climbed to NT$3.068 billion, a 17.47% increase from the same period last year. The company attributed the growth to sustained global investment in high end AI chip development and accelerating advanced node semiconductor manufacturing, both of which have driven up outsourced demand for materials analysis and failure analysis services.
Nvidia's CPO Switches Signal a Data Center Turning Point
The growth comes as AI data centers confront a bottleneck that has become increasingly difficult to ignore: the sheer volume of data GPUs need to exchange with one another. As computing power inside AI servers has climbed, inter GPU data transfer has emerged as a new chokepoint, pushing high speed optical communication to the center of the next phase of industry development.
At the GTC conference in Taipei, Nvidia disclosed that its Spectrum X co packaged optics (CPO) switches, developed jointly with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., have begun shipping to select partners, with plans to scale production further in the second half of the year. The shift signals that AI data centers are moving beyond simply adding computing power and toward architectures built around high speed, low power photonic integration, a transition that stands to benefit the entire silicon photonics and CPO supply chain.
Unlike traditional pluggable optical transceiver modules, CPO technology places optical components directly next to switch chips, substantially improving transmission efficiency while cutting power consumption. That gain in performance comes at the cost of far greater packaging complexity, however, which is why demand for third party inspection services, covering materials analysis, defect detection and failure analysis, has grown quickly alongside it.
MA-tek says it has already built a leading position across the silicon photonics supply chain, with its testing and analysis services now penetrating more than half of the market. Its coverage spans photonic integrated circuit design, wafer foundry work, laser light sources and optical modules, effectively touching every major link in the chain.
As heterogeneous stacking techniques become more widespread, the company said, new categories of material defects and high speed signal issues have grown harder to detect, driving up demand for both interface material analysis and high speed signal failure diagnostics. Silicon photonics and photonic electronic integration processes, the company noted, depend on extremely precise heterogeneous wafer bonding, waveguide microstructures and interface material control, precision that conventional physical analysis tools can no longer resolve at the sub nanometer scale now required. To close that gap, MA-tek uses high sensitivity secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) to analyze trace impurities, doping concentrations and interface quality within materials, helping clients improve both device yield and photoelectric conversion efficiency.
New Failure Analysis Platform Targets High Value Contracts
Beyond materials analysis, MA-tek has also been building out its failure analysis capabilities. The company said it completed construction of its first dedicated failure localization platform for advanced photoelectric products in June, a system designed to quickly pinpoint problems such as signal attenuation and coupling failures that arise during CPO product development, mass production and reliability testing. The goal, the company said, is to help clients reduce trial and error costs and shorten both product validation and time to market.
With AI data centers continuing to migrate toward optical communication architectures, MA-tek expects silicon photonics and CPO related chips to remain in a phase of intensive validation and adoption for some time. The company anticipates continued growth in demand for advanced materials analysis and photoelectric coupling failure diagnostics, with highly customized, high value testing contracts positioned to become an important driver of its medium to long term revenue growth.
