Taiwan-listed compound semiconductor maker IntelliEPI Inc. (英特磊) held its annual shareholders' meeting on June 23, with chairman Kao Yung-chung telling investors the company is positioned for another revenue record in 2026 on the back of surging demand for high-speed optical communications infrastructure tied to AI data center buildouts.
The Taiwan-based epitaxial wafer specialist — which produces compound semiconductor materials used in fiber-optic transceivers and data center interconnects — posted consolidated revenue of NT$1.08 billion in 2025, a 50.49% jump from the prior year. Gross profit more than tripled, rising 239.1% to NT$380 million, pushing the gross margin to 35.7%. Operating profit reached NT$170 million, and net profit after tax came in at NT$65.3 million, or NT$1.65 in earnings per share.
InP Becomes The Company's Largest Product Line
At the heart of IntelliEPI's growth story is indium phosphide (InP), a compound semiconductor material increasingly favored for next-generation optical components because of its superior performance at high data transmission speeds. InP-based products accounted for 50% of the company's revenue in 2025 — its largest single product line — and Kao said that share is expected to climb further.
The company's InP portfolio spans PIN photodetectors, avalanche photodiodes (APDs), electroabsorption modulators (EAMs), electro-absorption modulated lasers (EMLs), and heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) drivers. Its 200G high-speed receiver products have entered volume production and are already being adopted by customers, Kao said.
Kao pointed to the accelerating pace of optical technology upgrades as a key demand driver. While the industry took years to transition from 100G to 400G data transmission speeds, he said customers are now pushing for 800G, 1.6 terabit, and even faster specifications within far shorter timeframes — a compression that is placing new demands on the entire supply chain.
Substrate Supply Concentration Poses A Strategic Risk
Even as demand accelerates, Kao flagged a structural bottleneck: the concentration of InP substrate supply. Japan's Sumitomo is currently the dominant global supplier of InP substrates, while U.S.-based AXT faces constraints from geopolitical tensions and export control regulations — factors that have left chipmakers like IntelliEPI exposed to single-source dependency.
To reduce that vulnerability, IntelliEPI has been working with Germany's Freiberger to help the company break into the InP substrate market. Kao said Freiberger is currently expanding its InP substrate production capacity, with IntelliEPI providing its own epitaxy and equipment expertise to help the European firm overcome manufacturing challenges. The collaboration, he said, is designed to establish a long-term supply relationship and give IntelliEPI greater supply chain flexibility going forward.
A Diversified Portfolio Beyond Indium Phosphide
When shareholders pressed on timing for more substantial growth, Kao pushed back on any characterization of IntelliEPI as a one-product company.
"We're not a single-trick pony," he said, noting that alongside its InP business, the company is simultaneously developing products in gallium arsenide (GaAs), gallium antimonide (GaSb), quantum dot lasers (QD Lasers), and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) equipment — a portfolio he argued insulates the company from over-reliance on any single application.
Kao said IntelliEPI plans to continue investing in capacity expansion, equipment upgrades, and new product development to sharpen its competitive position and lower production costs. With AI-related demand continuing to broaden and both its equipment and epitaxy businesses growing in tandem, he said the company holds a cautiously optimistic outlook for the next several years.
