As data centers race to support AI workloads at ever-higher transmission speeds, a Taiwan-listed epitaxial wafer maker is betting that a less-explored laser technology could give it an edge in the next wave of optical connectivity.
Kao Yung-chung, chairman of Intelliepi Technology (IET-KY, 4971), told shareholders on June 23 that the company has spent the past three years building out capabilities in gallium arsenide (GaAs)-based quantum dot lasers — a technology he believes is well-positioned to displace costlier alternatives as silicon photonics scales toward 800G and 1.6T interconnects.
Why QD lasers could undercut the dominant technology
The optical communications industry has long relied on indium phosphide (InP) distributed feedback (DFB) lasers as the standard light source, but Kao noted that InP substrates carry a comparatively high material cost. Quantum dot lasers built on GaAs substrates offer a cheaper foundation, and the technology also delivers better thermal stability and more precise power control — characteristics that become increasingly valuable at higher transmission speeds.
Despite growing industry interest, Kao acknowledged that manufacturers with genuine mass production capability in this space remain scarce globally, and that Intelliepi's own development work is still ongoing. The company recruited senior researchers in the field three years ago and built dedicated molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) equipment to support the program, with the longer-term aim of entering the silicon photonics light source supply chain.
A new Texas facility anchors the company's US expansion
Beyond the technology roadmap, Intelliepi is also expanding its physical footprint in the United States. Kao disclosed that the company's planned new facility in Allen, Texas, will span approximately 30,000 square feet and is designed to house up to 12 large-scale MBE systems. The site will serve a dual function, supporting both epitaxial wafer production and equipment assembly.
On the funding side, Kao said the company has begun drawing on grants from the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund (TSIF). A separate application under the US federal CHIPS Act has reached its final review stage, and Intelliepi expects a decision as early as the third quarter of this year.
Equipment sales add a new revenue stream
Intelliepi's ambitions extend beyond materials. The company has developed its own IET200 gallium nitride MBE system — an in-house designed and assembled tool that it sold to the Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute (TSRI). The equipment was delivered and installed in May, and is currently in the final stages of assembly ahead of testing and verification.
Kao said the company is in active discussions with additional Taiwanese customers about equipment partnerships, signaling that hardware sales could become a meaningful complement to its core epitaxial wafer business.
"In the future, Intelliepi will not only continue to deepen its position in the epitaxial materials market, but also hopes to build more diversified growth drivers through equipment exports, technical services, and next-generation light source development," Kao said.
