An Apache crash in the Strait of Hormuz has put a number on a brutal reality — U.S. air power is hemorrhaging assets at a rate not seen since Vietnam, and the bill is already $29 billion.
An AH-64 Apache attack helicopter assigned to U.S. Central Command went down in the Strait of Hormuz on June 8, though both crew members were rescued safely. The loss marked the first Apache destroyed in the conflict. According to Stars and Stripes and Japan's Sankei Shimbun, U.S. forces have now lost at least 43 aircraft of various types since President Trump ordered the launch of Operation Epic Fury — a toll that points to Iran's asymmetric warfare capabilities inflicting on U.S. air power its costliest attrition since the Vietnam War.
The aircraft loss record has delivered a sobering blow to Washington's hawks. Even as President Trump has continued to raise the pressure publicly — warning that ground troops could be deployed if Tehran refuses a ceasefire or refuses to yield — the list of destroyed aircraft underscores that launching a ground offensive without full air superiority would be an unwise choice.
The Pentagon's $29 Billion Problem
The financial scale of the campaign is beginning to register on Capitol Hill. Jules Hurst, the Pentagon's acting comptroller, testified before Congress last month that the cost of U.S. military operations against Iran has surged to $29 billion, Stars and Stripes reported.
Hurst was careful to define the scope of that figure: the $29 billion covers only the repair and replacement costs of U.S. military equipment destroyed or damaged in the conflict. It does not include reconstruction costs for American bases struck by Iranian missiles and drones. In other words, $29 billion represents only a fraction of Operation Epic Fury's actual expenditure.
A Congressional Research Service combat loss report published on May 13 documented 42 aircraft destroyed in the Middle Eastern theater at that point, with MQ-9 Reaper drones accounting for the single largest category — 24 units. Once the defining asset of counterterrorism campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Reaper has proven dangerously exposed against Iran's air defenses, effectively reduced to an unarmed aerial target. At approximately $30 million per unit, those 24 destroyed Reapers represent a direct loss of roughly $720 million to the U.S. Air Force. The episode lays bare a structural vulnerability of modern warfare: non-stealthy, medium-to-long-range drones face sharply diminished survivability in contested, high-intensity airspace.

Tehran's "Black Hawk Down" Moment
If the drone losses represent a fiscal problem, a rescue operation that unfolded in Iran in April exposed deeper operational limits — one that evokes the shadow of the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu. In early April, a U.S. F-15E Strike Eagle was shot down while conducting a mission over Iranian airspace. U.S. forces immediately launched a full-scale Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) operation, sending special operations troops deep into hostile territory in an attempt to recover the ejected pilot.
The rescue operation became an equipment catastrophe.
Under intense fire and in a hostile environment, U.S. forces were compelled to destroy three advanced aircraft on Iranian soil rather than allow them to fall into enemy hands: one A-10 Thunderbolt II providing close air support, and two MC-130J Commando II aircraft — specialized special operations transports among the most sensitive platforms in the U.S. inventory. An HH-60W Jolly Green II rescue helicopter was also severely damaged by small arms fire and barely returned to base.
The episode reveals a structural problem with behind-enemy-lines operations against a capable adversary. When recovering a single pilot requires sacrificing an attack aircraft, two special operations transports, and a heavily damaged helicopter, the rate of attrition becomes operationally unsustainable. Against an opponent with robust territorial air defenses and the capacity to mobilize militia forces, the difficulty of such missions has increased exponentially.
The Shadow of Chinese Weapons: Who Is Supplying Tehran?
According to NBC News, U.S. intelligence assessments indicate the weapon used to shoot down the F-15E was most likely a Chinese-manufactured Man-Portable Air-Defense System (MANPADS). The finding carries significant implications. Beijing has long maintained a posture of nominal diplomatic neutrality on Middle Eastern conflicts, yet persistent reporting has pointed to the transfer of dual-use technologies and advanced weapons to Tehran through third-country intermediaries and gray-zone channels.
If NBC's reporting is accurate, it would mean Chinese-manufactured shoulder-fired air defense missiles are capable of effectively threatening fourth-generation U.S. fighter aircraft. The proliferation of such asymmetric weapons has materially enhanced the combat capacity of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and its affiliated Shia militia networks. It also raises a broader strategic question: whether Beijing is leveraging the Iranian theater to probe the defensive limits of U.S. aircraft while simultaneously depleting Washington's precision-guided munitions stockpiles.
Friendly Fire and Base Strikes: Vulnerabilities Behind the Front Line
Beyond front-line losses over Iran, U.S. forces have also exposed significant gaps in rear-area coordination and base defense. The Congressional Research Service report documented several incidents that point to systemic failures.
First, a friendly fire incident over Kuwait. The report notes that three F-15Es were shot down over Kuwait by friendly air defense fire. In a battlespace that emphasizes networked warfare and Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) systems, such incidents suggest serious failures in airspace deconfliction and command coordination under conditions of high-intensity electronic warfare and battlefield confusion.

Second, the breach of a supposedly secure Saudi rear base. Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia had long been regarded as one of the most secure U.S. rear installations in the Middle East. During a large-scale Iranian missile and drone saturation strike, five KC-135 tanker aircraft on the ground were damaged. More critically, an E-3 Sentry Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft — a high-value theater command and surveillance platform — was struck while parked on an open taxiway.
The incident demonstrated that under the threat of Iran's medium-to-long-range precision-strike missiles, there is no longer an absolutely secure rear area in the Middle East. The U.S. military's practice of leaving high-value support aircraft exposed on open aprons has proven a critical vulnerability when facing an adversary capable of saturation attacks.

Third, the unresolved mystery of a tanker crash over Iraq. In the early phase of the conflict, a KC-135 on patrol in ostensibly friendly Iraqi airspace went down, killing all six crew members aboard. A second tanker operating alongside was also affected and forced to make an emergency landing.
The cause of the crash remains contested. The Atlantic reported that the pilots may have been maneuvering to evade surface-to-air anti-aircraft fire from Iranian-backed Shia militias operating within Iraq. U.S. Central Command denied that account. The Air Force-led investigation board has leaned toward characterizing the event as a preventable aviation accident in congested airspace.
Regardless of the final determination, the incident highlights that U.S. air refueling tracks are operating under significant hostile pressure. Without reliable tanker coverage, U.S. combat aircraft face sharply reduced operational range and loiter time — a constraint that could structurally degrade the entire air campaign.
Trump's Ground War Gamble
Against this backdrop of sustained air losses, Washington's strategic decision-making faces an acute dilemma. Sankei Shimbun has reported that Trump continues to project an outwardly aggressive posture, threatening a resumed and expanded air campaign — and potentially a ground invasion — should Tehran refuse to make substantive concessions at the negotiating table.
Military experts, however, argue that those threats appear increasingly disconnected from operational realities.
A ground campaign against Iran — a nation with rugged terrain, a large territorial mass, and armed forces numbering in the hundreds of thousands — would require helicopter-borne air assault operations, special operations resupply by transport aircraft, and close air support to protect ground force flanks. Yet the current conflict record shows meaningful attrition across precisely those platforms: MC-130J special operations transports, A-10 close air support aircraft, HH-60W rescue helicopters, and AH-64 Apache attack helicopters have all sustained notable losses against Iranian air defenses.
If U.S. forces have already lost 43 aircraft before any large-scale ground operation has begun, military experts warn that helicopter and transport fleets supporting a ground invasion would face unprecedented air attrition. That operational reality, they argue, will significantly constrain the decision-making space available to both the White House and the Pentagon — rendering the ground war option less a credible threat than a costly gamble with uncertain strategic logic.
