Apple's developer conference this week was billed as an AI event. In many respects it was. But running alongside the Siri AI announcements was something more quietly consequential: the most thorough performance and design overhaul iOS has seen in several years.
iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, visionOS 27, and tvOS 27 are all coming as free software updates this autumn. Developer betas opened on June 8, with a public beta expected next month. The upgrade touches speed, stability, visual design, cross-platform sharing, and health features — making it less a feature release than a platform-wide renovation.
Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of software engineering, framed the ambition directly: this year, Apple intends to bring next-generation Apple Intelligence to every platform while simultaneously making that software faster, more reliable, and easier to use. iOS 27 is the vehicle for both goals at once.

Apple came to WWDC26 with concrete performance benchmarks, which is notable in itself. Under iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, app launch speeds improve by up to 30%. Photos load up to 70% faster after being taken. AirDrop transfer speeds climb by up to 80%. iPad file transfers to and from external storage devices improve by up to five times, reaching transfer rates comparable to Mac Finder.
What makes these figures more meaningful is which devices Apple used to measure them. App launch testing was conducted on an iPhone 11 Pro Max. Photo loading was tested on an iPhone 15. AirDrop on an iPhone 16 Plus. iPad external storage on an M4 11-inch iPad Pro. The spread across hardware generations signals that these gains are not reserved for the newest models — users with devices several years old should see real improvements.
Search Has Been Rebuilt at the Foundation
Less visible but potentially just as impactful is a ground-up rebuild of search. Spotlight, Photos search, and Mail search have all been re-engineered for better stability and responsiveness. Mail also gains a new ranking system designed to make Top Hits more reliably surface what users are actually looking for.
For anyone who depends on iPhone, iPad, or Mac for daily work, search quality is one of those things that rarely gets celebrated when it works well and creates constant friction when it does not. Apple is treating it as infrastructure worth fixing properly.
Liquid Glass Gets a User-Controlled Dial
Last year's introduction of the Liquid Glass visual language drew mixed reactions. Some welcomed its depth and translucency; others found the transparency levels too aggressive for comfortable reading. Apple has responded with a practical solution: a new slider in Settings that lets users tune Liquid Glass from fully translucent to fully opaque, putting visual comfort directly in the user's hands.
macOS 27 also walks back some of the more disorienting aspects of recent design changes. Apple is restoring familiar elements — more consistent top toolbars, sidebars that extend to screen edges, and the return of colorful sidebar icons. The direction suggests Apple is trying to advance its design language without leaving usability behind.
In a move with practical implications for mixed-device households, Apple is extending iCloud Shared Albums to Android and Windows users. Participants on non-Apple platforms will be able to join shared albums and contribute photos at full resolution. For families or teams that do not operate exclusively within the Apple ecosystem, this removes a meaningful point of friction.
Other platform additions include expanded menopause and perimenopause tracking in the Health app, with notifications for related cycle changes. Apple Vision Pro gains the ability to convert panoramic photos taken in the past into spatial scenes usable as personal environments. Apple Maps is upgrading its Flyover feature with aerial imagery combined with AI to render cities and buildings in greater detail.
The Bigger Picture: A Platform Renovation, Not Just an AI Add-On
iOS 27 is easiest to summarize as Apple's AI update, but that framing undersells what was announced. The performance gains affect everyday interactions that have nothing to do with intelligence features. The Liquid Glass adjustments address a genuine usability concern. The cross-platform sharing expansion acknowledges that Apple's users do not live in a sealed ecosystem.
