Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan (陳立武) addressed intensifying competition in the AI PC and high-end PC markets at Computex 2026 on June 2, responding directly to questions about NVIDIA's entry into the AI PC segment and AMD's sustained expansion across premium desktop, gaming, and data center processors.
This year's Computex represents more than a product showcase for Intel. It marks Tan's first major public articulation of a strategic overhaul — spanning the Core Ultra Series 3, Core Series 3, Arc G processors, a discrete GPU lineup, and handheld device processors — aimed at conveying a core message: PCs will not exit the AI era, but will instead become a primary interface for human-AI interaction through local AI, hybrid inference, and agentic AI applications.
NVIDIA Enters AI PC; Intel Says Competition Validates the Market
At the post-keynote press conference, Intel was asked whether NVIDIA's recent AI PC products would disrupt or redefine the PC market. Intel executives responded that NVIDIA's entry is "a good thing" — it keeps the company on its toes and confirms that the PC remains strategically critical.
Intel executives stated the company already covers the full product spectrum — from mainstream laptops to high-end workstations — and has established relationships with long-term customers and partners. From Intel's perspective, NVIDIA's move into AI PCs does not merely introduce a new competitor; it reinforces the PC as a primary deployment environment for AI applications.
The response reflects a structural shift underway in AI PC competition. Historically, PC rivalry centered on CPU performance, power efficiency, integrated graphics, and platform cost. As generative AI and agentic AI move to the device edge, however, the coordinated performance of CPU, GPU, NPU, and memory architecture will increasingly determine how much inference, data processing, and personalized task execution a PC can handle locally.
AMD Competition in Premium Desktop: Intel Points to Roadmap, Not Price War
AMD remains Intel's most direct competitor in both PC and data center markets. Journalists asked how Intel plans to respond to AMD's significant gains among enthusiast and DIY PC users in the high-end desktop segment in recent years.
Tan declined to address competitive specifics, noting that AMD CEO Lisa Su (蘇姿丰) is a personal friend and that some business overlap exists, before deferring to Intel's business unit leadership. Intel executives said Tan had reviewed the product roadmap upon taking office and was, by their account, "pleasantly surprised" by its contents, adding that Intel will have a strong product roadmap going forward.
Intel executives further stated that the company's competitive foundation rests on its existing assets, with the CPU core identified as the most valuable. Under Tan's leadership, the signal Intel is sending externally is not a short-term price war but a return to the CPU core, architecture, manufacturing process discipline, and product cadence. Simultaneously recapturing ground in AI PCs, the gaming market, and data centers will require consistent roadmap execution — not a single breakthrough product.
Intel 18A Process and Series 3 Processors as the Core of the AI PC Counteroffensive
Intel placed its 18A manufacturing process and Series 3 processor family at the center of its PC strategy at Computex. The company stated that Core Ultra Series 3 processors, built on the Intel 18A process, are now powering designs for more than 325 consumer and commercial PC configurations — a figure Intel cited as evidence of partner and customer adoption.
Alongside Core Ultra Series 3, Intel launched the Core Series 3 processor line, which uses the same advanced IP as Core Ultra Series 3 but at more competitive price points, targeting a new generation of thin, stylish, and power-efficient PCs. The dual-track approach suggests Intel is attempting both to establish a technology premium position in high-end AI PCs and to extend its reach across mainstream PC demand.
Intel executives noted at the press conference that the 18A process is particularly attractive for PC and edge applications because of the flexibility it offers engineering teams to tune device performance and capability. The framing positions 18A not merely as a process node milestone but as a differentiation platform for PC and edge AI products.
In the AI PC era, differentiation is expected to extend beyond benchmark scores or single-core CPU performance to encompass local AI inference, battery longevity, hybrid cloud-device computation, privacy protection, and application ecosystems. Whether Series 3 processors can achieve rapid volume shipments and broad design wins will be a key indicator of whether Intel's repositioning translates into market share recovery.
GPU and Handheld Devices: Intel Opens New Competitive Fronts
GPU capability has emerged as a significant element of Intel's response to both AI PC and gaming market competition. Intel executives stated explicitly at the press conference that GPU is "a very important part" of the PC product line. Citing substantial revenue in both mobile and PC gaming, Intel said it intends to participate meaningfully in those markets while also positioning GPU as a core component of on-device AI capability.
This aligns with Intel's announcement of a move into the handheld device segment. The company said the Series 3 processor family has been extended to the growing handheld device market, with the new Intel Arc G series processors set to begin shipping this month. While the handheld market remains smaller in absolute scale compared to the laptop segment, it combines high performance, low power consumption, gaming experience requirements, and portable AI applications — making it a useful proving ground for Intel's integrated CPU, GPU, and platform capabilities.
