In early April 2026, a high-stakes rescue operation deep inside Iranian territory unexpectedly ignited a wave of public debate on Chinese social media — not because of the audacity of the mission itself, but because state media's attempt to frame the mission as a costly failure produced a reaction no editorial team appeared to anticipate. 100 Special Operations Forces Enter Iran Overnight in Complex Rescue Mission
The incident began on April 3, when a U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle was shot down over Iran's Isfahan Province during a mission. Both crew members ejected. The pilot was recovered relatively quickly, but the rear-seat Weapon Systems Officer (WSO) lost contact after ejecting. Drawing on SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape) training, and despite a sprained ankle, the WSO climbed a ridge and concealed himself in a rocky crevice near a hilltop, evading capture inside Iran for more than 36 hours.
According to Reuters, citing informed U.S. officials, approximately 100 American special operations forces entered Iran under cover of darkness on April 4 to conduct a high-risk Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) operation. The CIA carried out a deception campaign beforehand, spreading false intelligence inside Iran suggesting the WSO had already been located and was being moved. U.S. forces simultaneously jammed Iranian electronic systems and struck key roads surrounding the rescue site to block Iranian troop movements. A senior U.S. official familiar with the mission said the CIA used specialized intelligence capabilities to pinpoint the WSO's exact location before immediately notifying the Pentagon, U.S. military commanders, and the White House.
