Beijing has opened a high-level investigation into Ma Xingrui (馬興瑞), a member of the Chinese Communist Party's Politburo and former party secretary of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, making him the third member of the current Politburo to face such scrutiny since the 20th Party Congress in 2022. The move underscores the continued reach of President Xi Jinping's anti-corruption drive into senior party ranks.

Probe Announced

China's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) and National Supervisory Commission announced on April 3 that Ma is under joint disciplinary review and supervisory investigation for suspected “serious violations of discipline and law.” The brief notice, carried by state media, did not provide details of the allegations or specify any criminal charges.

Quiet Exit from Power

Ma, 66, stepped down as Xinjiang party secretary in July 2025 and has received no new official assignment despite retaining his Politburo status. His withdrawal from frontline roles had already fueled speculation about his political future before the formal announcement of the probe. His last confirmed public appearance was at a military parade in Tiananmen Square on September 3, 2025. Since then he has been absent from several key high-level gatherings he would normally be expected to attend, including Politburo study sessions and major year-end policy meetings. State media footage and official readouts have not shown him among attending leaders, drawing months of quiet speculation among observers about whether he had fallen out of favor.
