Kuomintang Chairperson Cheng Li-wun(鄭麗文) is scheduled to visit mainland China from April 7 to April 12. This marks the first time in a decade that a sitting KMT chair has made such a highly consequential diplomatic trip to the mainland.
Chinese Communist Party General Secretary Xi Jinping (習近平) is expected to personally receive Cheng during her visit. This monumental meeting has prompted a massive wave of questions from geopolitical analysts and cross-strait observers regarding its precise timing and underlying motivations.
Observers question why the visit was specifically timed to precede a planned trip to China by U.S. President Donald Trump. Furthermore, they wonder if Beijing's willingness to proceed reflects growing anxiety over the sudden suspension of cross-strait exchanges by the Ma Ying-jeou Foundation.

Within three minutes of the mainland announcement, the KMT's Cultural and Communications Committee issued its own official confirming response. The upcoming visit confirms what had long been rumored across Taiwan: the highly anticipated "Cheng-Xi meeting" is now formally scheduled.
The meeting's successful arrangement is largely credited to veteran KMT strategist Chang Jung-kung(張榮恭), who serves as party vice chairperson. Last November, Chang traveled personally to the mainland to meet directly with Song Tao.

During their extensive meeting, Chang walked Song through the historical arc of previous KMT-CCP summits and the institutional context of their communication platforms. Following this crucial diplomatic groundwork, the KMT-CCP think tank forum was successfully relaunched, paving the way for Cheng's visit.
Two Structural Factors For April
According to sources, Beijing had agreed in principle to the historic Cheng-Xi meeting long before the Lunar New Year. What remained to be settled was the exact timing and the substantive political agenda, as neither side wanted a merely symbolic gathering.
Second, the mainland had originally anticipated receiving Trump around late March or early April and reserved mid-April for Cheng. When Trump unilaterally postponed his visit to mid-May, both sides agreed to maintain their original April timeline to accommodate the KMT's electoral pressures.
Responding To The Ma Foundation Turmoil
The Cheng-Xi meeting arrives as the influential Ma Ying-jeou Foundation navigates significant internal disruption and structural upheaval after former Executive Directors Hsiao Hsu-tsen(蕭旭岑)andWang Kuang-tzu (王光慈) were recently removed from their leadership positions.
Under new leadership, the foundation has reportedly suspended all student exchange programs to the mainland. Observers question whether Beijing is using the Cheng-Xi meeting to send a clear signal in response to the foundation's abrupt policy reversal.
Sources indicate that Beijing has sent a clear signal of affirmation and direct political support toward Cheng. The confirmed meeting demonstrates that Beijing assesses overall policy orientation rather than relying strictly on individual political networks or factional affiliations.
Beijing reportedly finds the Ma Foundation's total suspension of cross-strait exchange activities deeply troubling and genuinely puzzling. This rapid trajectory sits quite uneasily alongside former President Ma's longstanding public commitment to cross-strait youth exchanges.
While Beijing continues to acknowledge Ma's historical contributions, the foundation's current trajectory has prompted serious geopolitical questions. Analysts wonder if an internal factional contest between pro-China and pro-U.S. figures is currently reshaping the foundation's institutional direction.
