A fire erupted on the afternoon of March 16 at the Zhuyuan Extra-High-Voltage Substation, located within the Hsinchu Science Park. Thick smoke billowed into the air, and explosions were heard nearby, raising concerns about potential disruptions to power supplies for the semiconductor manufacturing facilities located in the park.
The blaze occurred around 3:30 p.m. on March 16 during a routine test of voltage-stabilizing equipment. While the incident caused a temporary voltage dip for some users, no full power outage occurred. Three contractor workers sustained injuries and were promptly taken to the hospital for treatment.
Concerns Over Semiconductor Production Impact
The Zhuyuan substation is critical for maintaining a stable power supply for the Hsinchu Science Park, which houses some of the world's leading semiconductor manufacturers, including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). Given the proximity to key wafer production plants, concerns quickly emerged about the potential for production line disruptions. However, TSMC has officially confirmed that no operational impacts are expected, and power supply at its facilities remains stable.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. TSMC's statement emphasized that the situation was under control and that the semiconductor production lines were not expected to be affected.
