The 2026 Mobile World Congress (MWC), held March 2–5 in Barcelona, marked a pivotal inflection point for the global telecommunications industry. Taiwan's three major telecom operators — Chunghwa Telecom (中華電信), Far EasTone (遠傳電信), and Taiwan Mobile (台灣大哥大) — each sealed deep strategic alliances with Nokia and Ericsson, staking out early positions in the race to define AI-native networks and commercialize Pre-6G technology.

The gathering signaled a clear shift in industry priorities: bandwidth benchmarks have given way to a more complex agenda encompassing artificial intelligence, energy efficiency, national security, and satellite connectivity. Chunghwa Telecom: Building an Intelligent Ecosystem

Chunghwa Telecom President Lin Jung-tzu (林榮賜) led the company's delegation to Barcelona, opening proceedings at the Nokia pavilion with the signing of a comprehensive memorandum of understanding covering 5G-Advanced, Pre-6G, and AI intelligent networks through 2026.

The agreement is underpinned by concrete results from the previous year. The two companies' joint 2025 trials of AI Predictive Hardware Analytics (PHWA) achieved close to 80% accuracy in forecasting hardware failures — enabling technicians to intervene before customers experience any service disruption.
"AI-driven network optimization is the indispensable path for telecom operators moving toward automated operations," Lin said during discussions with Nokia executives. "We are not simply upgrading equipment. We are building an intelligent ecosystem with sensing, computing, and decision-making capabilities."

Chunghwa Telecom also showcased the MC2521 RedCap (lightweight 5G) smart surveillance camera co-developed with Pegatron (和碩). Field trials at Kaohsiung's Asia Bay 5G AIoT Innovation Park demonstrated that the low-power, high-density connectivity of 5G-Advanced can fundamentally reshape the cost structure of smart city infrastructure.
