In 1935, as storm clouds gathered over Europe and Nazi Germany prepared for war, the regime aggressively promoted "Aryanism." This insidious ideology held that true Germans were pure Aryans, inherently superior and destined to dominate other races, particularly Jews. To visually cement this propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi minister of propaganda, organized a photography competition to find the "most ideal Aryan baby."
The winning photograph featured a baby girl with thick hair, a full face, symmetrical features, and piercing eyes. She quickly became the poster child for German racial superiority. Her image was plastered across Nazi propaganda materials, magazines, and postcards, symbolizing the Third Reich's pursuit of racial purity and its horrific commitment to exterminating those it deemed inferior.
Hessy Levinsons Taft, the child in that famous image, died on Jan. 1 in San Francisco at the age of 91. Her passing marks the end of a life that inadvertently created one of history's greatest ironies, while also serving as a miraculous testament to survival against a regime that sought to systematically annihilate her people.
Born in Berlin on May 17, 1934, to Ashkenazi Jewish parents Jacob and Pauline Levinsons, opera singers originally from Latvia, Taft was just 6 months old when her parents hired renowned photographer Hans Ballin for a portrait. Satisfied with the result, they displayed it on their piano. Months later, their cleaning woman recognized the child on the cover of "Sonne ins Haus" (Sun in the House), a prominent Nazi family magazine.
Horrified to find her daughter's face alongside pages of Nazi propaganda and photographs of Adolf Hitler, Pauline Levinsons confronted Ballin. The photographer revealed he had deliberately submitted the photo to the Nazi contest as a subversive prank to expose the sheer absurdity of their racial theories. Goebbels himself selected the winning image, entirely unaware that the poster child for his genocidal ideology was a member of the very demographic he was plotting to destroy.

The irony is profound. Goebbels, one of Hitler's most fanatical loyalists, would eventually murder his own children and commit suicide as the regime collapsed. Yet the Jewish child he unwittingly elevated as the pinnacle of Aryan perfection lived on, her existence a permanent mockery of Nazi pseudoscience.

This was not an isolated blunder for the regime. In 1939, Nazi publications featured Werner Goldberg as the "ideal German soldier" to project military strength, entirely ignorant that Goldberg's father was Jewish and facing persecution.
Taft's family did not have the luxury of treating the situation as a mere joke. Fearing execution if her true identity were discovered, her parents kept her hidden indoors before fleeing the country in 1937. Their harrowing journey took them from Berlin to Latvia, Paris, Nice, and Cuba, before they finally settled in New York in 1949.
Unlike the millions who perished, Taft was granted the opportunity to grow up and thrive. She graduated with a degree in chemistry from Barnard College, earned her doctorate from Columbia University, and married Earl Taft, a renowned mathematician. After dedicating years to raising her two children, she spent three decades at the Educational Testing Service overseeing Advanced Placement chemistry programs. At age 66, she returned to academia as an adjunct chemistry professor at St. John's University, researching water sustainability until her retirement in 2016.
Taft never wasted the miraculous opportunity that allowed her family to escape persecution. Her life, marked by academic achievement and quiet resilience, outlasted the architects of the Holocaust. The baby who was once used to sell a lie of racial supremacy grew into a woman whose very existence embodied the enduring triumph of the human spirit.
