China's newest amphibious assault ship has emerged from a Shanghai shipyard displaying a stealth drone model on its flight deck, a development military analysts say signals a significant pivot toward unmanned systems in Beijing's strategy for potential conflicts in the Taiwan Strait.
The Type 076 vessel, identified as the "Sichuan," completed a 38-day maintenance and system testing on Jan. 31.
While the ship's size and design are notable, it was the presence of a canvas-covered aircraft model—closely resembling a GJ-21 (Attack-21) stealth drone—that drew immediate attention from defense observers. The sighting suggests the People's Liberation Army (PLA) is aggressively moving to integrate combat drones with amphibious warfare platforms.
A New Class of 'Drone Carrier'
The Type 076 represents a distinctive leap in naval capability.Unlike its predecessors, it is equipped with electromagnetic aircraft launch systems —advanced catapult technology primarily designed to launch heavy combat drones rather than conventional manned fighter jets. The presence of full-scale drone mockups on deck suggests the Chinese navy is already conducting hangar management and deck handling exercises while the actual aircraft undergo final testing at military facilities.
