Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Phipat Ratchakitprakarn has floated the idea of building a Disneyland theme park in the country's Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), saying the project could draw an additional 10 million tourists annually and generate more than 150 billion baht (about US$4.4 billion) in revenue.
Phipat has insisted the proposal is not campaign rhetoric. But Taiwanese business figures operating in Thailand remain cautious, noting that the announcement comes just days before Thailand's February 8 general election—and questioning whether the plan will progress beyond political messaging. Disney Pitch Cast as “Economic Diplomacy”
According to the Bangkok Post, Phipat cited a January 30 Facebook post by Thailand's embassy in Washington describing the country as “positioning itself as a leading contender for Southeast Asia's first Disneyland,” framing the idea as part of Thailand's broader economic-diplomacy push.
He argued that Thailand's infrastructure—including international airports, planned high-speed rail links, deep-water ports and highway networks—could support a large-scale global tourism investment.
If realized, Phipat claimed, the project could create more than 100,000 jobs and add roughly one percentage point to Thailand's annual GDP growth.
Disney currently operates four theme parks in Asia outside the United States: Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea in Japan, Hong Kong Disneyland, and Shanghai Disneyland in China.
Election Math Clouds Feasibility
A Taiwanese businessperson based in Thailand told Storm Media that the Disney proposal appears more symbolic than concrete.
“He needs to win the election first to have any chance,” the source said, adding that many voters are likely to reserve judgment until after ballots are counted.
Phipat's Bhumjaithai Party is part of the current governing coalition but placed third in the previous election, behind the now-dissolved Move Forward Party and the Pheu Thai Party. The successor People's Party now holds the largest bloc in parliament.

Security Concerns Dominate Public Attention
The Taiwanese business source, who requested anonymity due to business sensitivities, said public attention in Thailand is currently focused less on long-term tourism projects and more on rising tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border.
Local media reports have suggested Thailand's military is considering airstrikes against Cambodia, and the source said public sentiment appears broadly supportive of a tougher stance.
From the perspective of many Thai citizens, the source said, Cambodian leaders have repeatedly accused Thailand of initiating past clashes while appealing to the United Nations for mediation—even as Thai civilians were killed and Cambodian artillery reportedly landed on Laotian territory.

“It looks as if they want to fight everyone around them,” the businessperson said.
The source also claimed that former U.S. President Donald Trump previously intervened to help de-escalate a Thai-Cambodian confrontation, warning that Washington would impose an additional 36 percent tariff if fighting continued. Trump later publicly described the ceasefire as a “great peace deal.”
According to the businessperson, clashes have since resumed.
Strength Over Spectacle?
The Taiwanese investor said Thailand retains a clear military advantage over Cambodia, particularly in air power, and that mainstream Thai public opinion currently supports the government's security posture—even as dissatisfaction with economic performance persists.
“People may criticize the economy,” the source said, “but they see the government as credible on national security. In Southeast Asia, where small countries are everywhere, showing strength still matters.”
