Modi's government's balancing act between "strategic autonomy" and "America First" represents a major geopolitical shift that reshapes global energy supply chains. But is this $500 billion procurement commitment a win-win economic partnership, or political coercion wrapped in sugar coating?

After months of escalating trade confrontations and diplomatic tensions, President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi finally reached a handshake agreement on February 2.

This major trade deal, announced via social media, marks another "transactional" victory for Trump in the geopolitical chess game: the United States agreed to withdraw heavy punitive tariffs on India, reducing rates from 50% to 18%. In exchange, New Delhi pledged to stop purchasing Russian oil.

Trumpannounced triumphantly on Truth Social that India would pivot to purchasing American energy and oil from Venezuela after its recent political transformation following U.S. military intervention. "Out of friendship and respect for Prime Minister Modi and, as per his request, effective immediately, we agreed to a Trade Deal between the United States and India, whereby the United States will charge a reduced Reciprocal Tariff, lowering it from 25% to 18%."
