Japanese Prime Minister and Liberal Democratic Party President Sanae Takaichi has issued a definitive ultimatum regarding her political survival, pledging immediate resignation should the ruling coalition fail to secure a parliamentary majority in the upcoming February 8 Lower House election. Speaking at a Japan National Press Club debate on January 26—ahead of the campaign's official kickoff—Takaichi juxtaposed this domestic political gamble with a steadfast diplomatic posture, reaffirming that Tokyo's door remains open for dialogue with Beijing despite underlying geopolitical frictions.

The debate featured seven party leaders, including Takaichi, Yoshihiko Noda of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP), and leaders from the coalition partner Komeito, alongside Nippon Ishin no Kai, the Democratic Party for the People (DPFP), Sanseito, the Japanese Communist Party, and Reiwa Shinsengumi. Addressing diplomatic volatility, Takaichi faced scrutiny regarding her past remarks on a "Taiwan contingency," which critics argue have exacerbated Sino-Japanese tensions. Questions were raised about the efficacy of Japan's unilateral openness to dialogue absent reciprocal gestures from Beijing, particularly with the APEC summit in China approaching in November. Takaichi maintained that her fundamental stance remains unchanged, arguing that robust communication channels are most critical precisely when bilateral suspicions are high. She emphasized that engagement continues at various levels, rather than a total decoupling.
