Japanese Prime Minister and Liberal Democratic Party President Sanae Takaichi has issued a definitive ultimatum regarding her political survival, pledging immediate resignation should the ruling coalition fail to secure a parliamentary majority in the upcoming February 8 Lower House election. Speaking at a Japan National Press Club debate on January 26—ahead of the campaign's official kickoff—Takaichi juxtaposed this domestic political gamble with a steadfast diplomatic posture, reaffirming that Tokyo's door remains open for dialogue with Beijing despite underlying geopolitical frictions.
The debate featured seven party leaders, including Takaichi, Yoshihiko Noda of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP), and leaders from the coalition partner Komeito, alongside Nippon Ishin no Kai, the Democratic Party for the People (DPFP), Sanseito, the Japanese Communist Party, and Reiwa Shinsengumi.

Addressing diplomatic volatility, Takaichi faced scrutiny regarding her past remarks on a "Taiwan contingency," which critics argue have exacerbated Sino-Japanese tensions. Questions were raised about the efficacy of Japan's unilateral openness to dialogue absent reciprocal gestures from Beijing, particularly with the APEC summit in China approaching in November. Takaichi maintained that her fundamental stance remains unchanged, arguing that robust communication channels are most critical precisely when bilateral suspicions are high. She emphasized that engagement continues at various levels, rather than a total decoupling.
Regarding a potential summit with President Xi Jinping, Takaichi refrained from committing to specific logistics but underscored her intent to utilize all diplomatic avenues to ensure Beijing comprehends Japan's strategic position.
Transitioning to domestic stability, Takaichi dismissed concerns over a marginal dip in cabinet approval ratings following the dissolution of the Lower House, framing the fluctuation as normal. Underscoring the stakes of the election, she declared she would step down if the LDP and its coalition partners do not retain a combined majority, citing an inability to execute policy mandates without legislative dominance. In a move reflecting the shifting balance of power, Takaichi admitted that a simple coalition majority is a conservative baseline, implicitly acknowledging that the LDP cannot govern alone.
On economic policy, Takaichi outlined an ambitious plan to temporarily reduce the consumption tax on food and beverages to zero in fiscal year 2026. She proposed delegating the specifics to a bipartisan national council, aiming for consensus by summer to introduce tax reform legislation in the autumn extraordinary Diet session.
Addressing the "slush fund" scandal involving unreported political funds, Takaichi defended the controversial decision to endorse implicated lawmakers. She argued that following prosecutorial and external legal reviews, the infractions were deemed largely negligent rather than malicious. Citing their administrative competence and public utility, she justified their nomination and inclusion in the proportional representation lists as a "second chance."
Finally, responding to opposition claims that Japan's revised national security documents merely align Tokyo with Washington's containment strategy against China, Takaichi asserted strategic autonomy. She insisted the revisions were independent decisions dictated by Japan's deteriorating security environment, rather than subservience to the U.S., framing the election as a direct referendum on her administration's defense trajectory.
