While TSMC is often the first name international observers associate with Taiwan's economy, the island's industrial strengths extend well beyond semiconductors. Taiwan is home to a broad ecosystem of globally competitive companies and technologies—many of which are now gaining renewed attention amid shifting geopolitical and technological trends.
Speaking on Storm Media’s current-affairs program ''Fly to the World'' (下班國際線), Carl Wegner, President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan (AmCham Taiwan), outlined what he described as Taiwan’s emerging “golden goose” industries in a conversation with host Catherine Lu.Over the next one to three years, Wegner sees particularly strong growth potential in data center–related infrastructure, including AI servers, networking equipment, and a wide range of computing components.(Related:AmCham Taiwan Chief: TSMC’s ‘Trust Advantage’ Is Key—But Power Risks Loom for Foreign Investors|Latest)
Long-Term Investment Thinking Under Geopolitical Uncertainty
Wegner stressed that international business investment in Taiwan is shaped by long-term planning rather than short-term calculations. Multinational companies, he noted, typically evaluate commitments over decades, not years. This perspective has become increasingly salient as geopolitical risks factor more prominently into corporate decision-making.
He recalled that before assuming his role at AmCham Taiwan, he was visited by counterparts from the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine. Even after Russia's invasion, the Ukrainian chamber's executive director told him, most member companies managed to continue operating. That experience prompted Wegner to reflect on how AmCham Taiwan could better help its own members prepare for potential crises.
According to Wegner, the Ukrainian chamber distilled three priorities for managing geopolitical shocks: strengthening cloud computing capabilities and cybersecurity; ensuring a stable power supply; and preparing critical infrastructure well in advance.Drawing on those lessons, Wegner outlined four strategic directions he believes Taiwan should emphasize: reinforcing infrastructure and digital resilience; encouraging firms to develop robust business continuity plans; maintaining policy stability and predictability; and deepening international partnerships through cooperation with other countries and governments.
Together, he argued, these four pillars can help Taiwan navigate an increasingly uncertain geopolitical environment.
Wegner also pointed to the Taiwanese government's ongoing promotion of a “whole-of-society resilience” framework, which he described as an important signal to international investors. Beyond physical infrastructure, such an approach reflects a broader commitment to preparedness and coordination—factors that can bolster external confidence in Taiwan's long-term stability.
Where Is Taiwan's Next “Silicon Shield”?
When asked which industries beyond TSMC and semiconductors hold the greatest promise, Wegner cautioned against viewing Taiwan's economic performance through a single-company lens. “It's not just TSMC driving up the stock market,” he said, emphasizing the importance of Taiwan's broader corporate ecosystem.
In the near term, he again highlighted data center infrastructure—including AI servers, networking equipment, and related components—as areas likely to see significant growth over the next one to three years. Looking further ahead, Wegner identified smart manufacturing and Taiwan's traditional strengths in precision manufacturing as enduring advantages. Taiwan's ability to deliver high-precision, high-quality production, he noted, positions these sectors for steady demand over the long run.

When Lu asked which industries beyond TSMC and semiconductors show promise, Wegner responded that "it's not just TSMC driving up the stock market." He emphasized Taiwan's broader corporate ecosystem, highlighting the significant development potential in data center infrastructure over the next one to three years, including AI servers, networking equipment, and computing components.
Looking further ahead, Wegner identified smart manufacturing and Taiwan's traditional precision manufacturing as enduring strengths. Taiwan excels in detailed, high-quality precision manufacturing—a sector that will maintain consistent market demand.
