Opinion | Canada’s Strategic Pivot to Beijing Risks Inviting Severe Retaliation from a Deceptive Trump

Amidst a high-stakes visit to Beijing, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has signed a reciprocal tariff reduction agreement with Xi Jinping (習近平), framing the deal as the cornerstone of a "new era of partnership." This strategic pivot appears to be a calculated move by Carney to leverage Chinese influence as a hedge against Donald Trump's protectionist pressures. Underscoring the systemic risk, Trump’s provocative suggestion that Canada should become the "51st state" reflects a radicalized extension of a long-standing U.S. geopolitical strategy.
