For more than a decade, Tseng Ya-ni(曾雅妮) lived with a question few elite athletes ever escape: Was her greatest chapter already behind her?
Once the youngest player in history to complete a career Grand Slam, Tseng dominated women’s golf at an age when most professionals were still finding their footing. Then came the fall—injuries, mounting pressure, public scrutiny, and eleven years without a title. In October 2025, at theWistron Ladies Open (緯創女子公開賽)in Taiwan , she finally won again.
The trophy mattered. But for Tseng, the deeper victory lay elsewhere.
A Return Long in the Making
The tournament itself mirrored her career. Persistent fog delayed play again and again, forcing players into a cycle of waiting, warming up, and standing down. “Those days felt like my life on tour,” Tseng recalled. “Always preparing, hoping, and sometimes being disappointed.”
She steadied herself. By the end of the first day, she sensed she was near the top of the leaderboard—close enough to know, but not close enough to dare look. That night, sleep was elusive. “I tried not to think about it,” she laughed, “but I still caught myself wondering what I might say if I won.”
By the final hole, disbelief replaced anxiety. She checked the scoreboard repeatedly, then asked officials to confirm it was real. Leading by three strokes, she broke down in tears. “I was proud,” she said. “Because I didn’t give up, I was standing there again.”

The Years No One Sees
The comeback followed years of struggle that rarely make highlight reels. Injuries required surgery. Media attention grew harsher as results slipped. “For a while, I would start shaking just by seeing golf clubs,” Tseng admitted.
Criticism came easily. Success had arrived early, and expectations never adjusted. When performances dipped, some dismissed her as unfocused or unserious. “People judge by results,” she said. “They don’t see what happens behind the scenes.”
What happened, she said, was relentless work—and quiet suffering. Golf, once a source of joy, became a burden. She began medication for mental health, and after a year, recognized how far she had drifted from herself. “I suddenly realized this wasn’t the person I wanted to be.”

Rebuilding from the Inside Out
Tseng stepped back from constant competition and turned inward. She attended meditation retreats, cutting herself off from outside noise. The first days were overwhelming. “I cried every day at the beginning,” she recalled. “Then slowly, I felt calm.”
She learned to appreciate ordinary moments—watching flowers, noticing insects, sharing meals. Over time, her sense of self expanded beyond golf.
That shift carried onto the course. In a bold technical move, she switched her putting stance from right-handed to left-handed. Within a week, she entered a tournament. On the first short putt—a distance that once terrified her—she felt unexpectedly calm. “It was like my hands changed, and my mind followed,” she said.

A Different Definition of Success
Today, Tseng speaks of life in terms of balance. She describes her priorities as a “nine-square grid” that now includes family, friendships, and life beyond competition. Golf remains central—but no longer consumes everything.

Today, Tseng speaks of life in terms of balance. She describes her priorities as a “nine-square grid” that now includes family, friendships, and life beyond competition. Golf remains central—but no longer consumes everything.
She does not promise a return to world No. 1. What she insists on is growth. “Continuing to improve doesn’t mean becoming who I was before,” she said. “It means becoming a better version of myself.”
That philosophy guides her advice to younger players. Dreams, she says, do not have to be grand to be meaningful. What matters is the desire to keep moving forward. She encourages young athletes to test themselves abroad, to fail if necessary, and to trust that home will still be there.
Retirement has crossed her mind. So has walking away. But for now, she stays. “I love this sport,” she said simply. “I still want to play. That’s enough.”
After eleven years in the wilderness, Tseng’s return is not just a story about winning again. It is about learning when to let go, when to change, and how to keep going—without losing oneself along the way.
