China conducted live-fire military exercises in the Taiwan Strait throughout the day of December 30.
In response, Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te stated on social media that he held a video conference with the Ministry of National Defense earlier to receive the latest situation report, urging related departments to remain calm, closely monitor developments, and respond promptly.
Lai emphasized that the drills are one of several recent Chinesecoercive military actions conducted near Taiwan, Japan, and the South China Sea, which have destabilized the region and threatened global shipping. He argued that such behavior is not befitting a responsible major power.
In light of these threats, Lai stressed that Taiwan will neither escalate conflicts nor concede ground. He reassured the public that Taiwan's national security personnel are following China's various military movements and cooperating with allied democracies.
He also expressed gratitude for the dedication of frontline military and coast guard personnel for allowing citizens to live their daily lives. He called for national unity against misinformation anddiscipline in safeguarding democracy.
