Taiwan People's Party legislator Huang Kuo-chang proposed a motion to impeach Taiwanese Premier Cho Jung-tai at a judiciary committee meeting on December 18. It passed with support from a majority coalition of the TPP and the Kuomintang.
The motion follows a recent decision by Cho not to endorse a proposed amendment previously passed by Taiwan's legislature that aimed to reallocate revenue from the central to local governments.
The committee passed the motion after hearing reports from various officials on the impact of this decision, with Huang claiming that the premier is not serving as a check against presidential power. (Related: KMT and TPP Leaders Meet, Prepare to Pass Motion of No Confidence | Latest )
Huang stated that his party would also formally propose to impeach Taiwanese President Lai Ching-t. The presidential office has not commented on the matter as of press time.
