Taiwan People's Party legislative caucus leader Huang Kuo-chang revealed in a radio program on December 17 thatmembers of his party had met with Kuomintang representatives on Tuesdaysparking speculation of a potential cross-party alliance against recent efforts by the Democratic Progressive Party to block legislation aiming to reallocate funding from the central government to local governments.

Both parties claim that the DPP's decision to block the legislation undermines other constitutional bodies' powers and impacts national fiscal sustainability.

"We need to prepare for a long-term struggle," Huang stated.

Democratic Progressive Party caucus secretary-general Chung Chia-pin sharply criticized the remarks, saying they amounted to a self-incrimination. Chung claimed Huang was engaged in hypocritical backroom dealing, emphasizing that the President and the Executive Yuan's positions were aligned.  (Related: Taiwanese Military Tightens Standards for Exemption Latest

He further noted that the legislature can call for a motion of no-confidence if it believes the Executive Yuan is derelict in its duties. If passed, such a motion would require the premier to resign within ten days.
