China's Ministry of Justice announced on Wednesday, December 3, that the country has expanded the scope of civil cases that Taiwanese lawyers who have obtained legal practice qualifications in China can accept.
Approved lawyers may handle legal services that do not involve court proceedings and accept a wider range of cross-strait civil cases, such as contract and intellectual property disputes involving Taiwan. The number of such case types has increased from 237 to 299, including new categories such as commercial maritime, personal rights, and property rights.
Zhang Han, spokesperson for the Beijing-controlled Taiwan Affairs Office, stated that the decision will allow Taiwanese legal professionals more opportunities to accept cross-strait cases while working in China.
Taiwanese lawyers are still required to pass a national standardized exam in China and obtain a local practice certificate after completing a one-year internship at a Taiwanese firm. They can only practice at one local Chinese firm at a time and are supervised by the Chinese judicial administration.
