A phone call between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump on November 24 revealed significant discrepancies between the two countries' priorities.
China's Xinhua News Agency emphasized China's "principled stance on the Taiwan issue" and other sensitive topics, such as the Russia-Ukraine war. Trump's statement following the conversation did not mention Taiwan, focusing instead on economic issues. This contrast in messaging has sparked discussions about the future direction of U.S.-China relations on contentious issues.
Official Discrepancies on Taiwan
There was a significant difference between China's official stance and Trump's personal statements regarding Taiwan.
Xinhua News Agency explicitly cited Xi as saying during the conversation that China held a "principled position on the Taiwan issue."
Xinhua further asserted that "Taiwan's return to China is a crucial part of the post-war international order," underscoring the need to safeguard the achievements of World War II.
Xinhua's report of the conversation also noted that Trump praised Xi as a "great leader," expressed complete agreement with China's perspective on bilateral relations, and acknowledged the importance of Taiwan to China.
In contrast to the official Chinese version of the conversation, Trump's summary post on his social media "Truth Social" highlighted economic cooperation between the two countries, noting that the countries have achieved significant agreements on issues such as soybeans, agricultural products, and fentanyl.
Trump stated that the conversation was a pleasant follow-up to their meeting in South Korea at the end of October, noting he had agreed to visit Beijing in April 2026, while also extending a reciprocal invitation for Xi to visit the U.S. in the latter half of 2026.
Trump did not mention sensitive geopolitical issues like Taiwan or the Russia-Ukraine war in his post, creating a noticeable gap between the two sides' narratives.
Why Did Xi Emphasize Taiwan Amid Geopolitical Tensions?
This decision by China to proactively disclose the call with Trump and emphasize the Taiwan issue coincides with heightened geopolitical tensions in East Asia.
Sino-Japanese relations are currently strained due to Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's recent comment in parliament that Japan may intervene in a potential conflict in the Taiwan Strait. In response, China's choice to highlight its stance on Taiwan in the context of Xi's discussion with Trump may be an attempt to gauge the U.S. response to the highly sensitive issue. Analysts also suggest that China might be attempting to indirectly apply pressure on Takaichi through Trump's statements.
